In these difficult times for Latin American sovereignty, the criminal siege of the island of Cuba pains us Mexicans especially. Those of us who subscribe to this call to support its people believe that it would be an outrage not to do so, at a time when the United States government is attempting to subdue it through hunger and deprivation, by intensifying the economic and military blockade it imposed on the island in the wake of the triumph of its revolution and in the face of its social, scientific, artistic, cultural, educational, sporting, and health successes, as well as its moving international solidarity. For years, Donald Trump sold the fantasy of quick wars. Surgical strikes, lightning operations, easy and cheap victories that could be announced at press conferences or celebrated on social media. The situation in Ecuador under Daniel Noboa’s government is one of authoritarianism advancing on several fronts simultaneously to consolidate neoliberalism and total submission to the US international agenda. These are not isolated measures, but rather a coordinated strategy that combines job insecurity, the dismantling of the welfare state, unrestricted access to mining, the continuation of oil exploitation without environmental considerations, the centralization of power through the financial suffocation of local governments, and the systematic criminalization of all forms of opposition and popular organization.
