The defeat of the left in Bolivia has raised a series of existential questions for the left in the region, and led many to draw hurried conclusions on where the blame lies
Bolivia’s left lost big in Sunday’s election, and a lot of the analysis in progressive circles has focused solely on the feud between former president Evo Morales and sitting president, Luis Arce. Morales was barred from running in the elections by Arce’s government and subsequently called for a null or blank vote in the contest. On Sunday, August 17, two right-wing candidates, Rodrigo Paz and Jorge Quiroga, emerged victorious, and they will proceed to the second round in October. (more…)

Those who do not live in war zones or in suffocated countries are forced to live life as if there is nothing strange about what is happening around us. When we read about war, it is disconnected from our lives, and many of us want to stop listening to anything about the human misery caused by weapons or by sanctions. The scholasticism of the academic and the hushed tones of the diplomat are silenced as the bomb and the bank wage war against the planet. After authorising the atom bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima (Japan) on 6 August 1945, US President Harry S. Truman announced on the radio: ‘If [the Japanese] do not now accept our terms, they may expect a rain of ruin from the air, the like of which has never been seen on this earth’. (more…)

National Bolivarian Militia to defend Venezuela’s “territory, sovereignty, and peace.”
Venezuela is once again facing a psychological and media offensive from the U.S. government, led by President Donald Trump. This week, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed Washington’s aggressive and interventionist policy, declaring that her country “is willing to use all elements of U.S. power” to halt the alleged flow of drugs into its territory and “bring those responsible to justice.” (more…)

The Argentine Jewish Appeal has filed criminal charges and called for the arrest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the “very serious crimes” committed by the army under his command against the Palestinian people since its invasion of Gaza.
