The Trump Administration tries its hardest to portray the Cuban people as being broken and defeated as they face a full blown blockade that has gone on for over 65 years. Marco Rubio rants and raves every Thursday as he tightens it down in new ways of deprivation. Meanwhile the Cuban people, as they endure these hardships, are anything but defeated. Here is just one story of thousands where Cubans are improvising and connecting on the community level. Most of these stories go untold. They take place without media attention or credit but they are a fundamental way of operating with a collective consciousness to overcome this economic war against them. In 2003, before the United States unleashed the war in Iraq, a webcam maintained a fixed shot of Baghdad for hours. The page’s tagline was more important than the technology: “They are not numbers.” There were no military maps or war reports there, just a street, cars, pedestrians—people still coming and going in a city about to be bombed. The camera didn’t stop the invasion. However, it did something essential. It put a face on those who would soon be reduced to statistics. (more…)
