Two decades ago, Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf Coast of the United States, a Category 5 monster that exposed the raw nerves of inequality, racism, and governmental neglect in the United States. While the storm itself was a force of nature, the true disaster was the response – or lack thereof – from the world’s wealthiest nation. Early last Friday morning, armed agents raided the home of John Bolton, Donald Trump’s former national security adviser, in Bethesda, Maryland. Details about the raid were scarce, but initial reports suggested that officials were looking for evidence that Bolton had disclosed classified information to journalists in his 2020 memoir, The Room Where It Happened. Cameras and microphones, strategically placed in the exclusive neighborhood, turned the operation into a media spectacle rather than a judicial proceeding. (more…)

Members of the National Guard, who together with other federal agencies in a Joint Task Force have occupied the U.S. capital, began carrying weapons on Sunday, as ordered by Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, who previously said they would only do so if required by justifiable circumstances. Were mistakes made? Of course, and of all sizes. Mistakes that did not begin only when Luis Arce Catacora took office, nor when Evo Morales returned to the country and was greeted by crowds of supporters, nor when Arce and his entourage plunged headlong into neoliberalism, bringing a host of misfortunes to large sectors of the population. In fact, already in the latter part of President Evo’s term, shortcomings were also detected, misguided shifts, internal factions that did not help to build, inconclusive struggles that revealed antagonistic ideological vectors between “Alvaristas” and “Evistas,” and which at the time were denounced by those great revolutionaries, the Peredo brothers (Chato and Osvaldo) and Mallku Felipe Quispe.
